We’ve done a lot of analyses on subject lines over the years, covering everything from dollar signs and percentages to capitalization and punctuation. Each time the goal was simply to better educate the decisions we all make about how we craft those all-important elements of every email campaign.
But the combinations of elements that drive a subject line’s performance are infinite. So instead of publishing another analysis this week, we’re releasing a tool we’ve been working that lets you create your own.
You can click here to start using it immediately, but here’s how it works.
Step 1
Write a Few Variations
You start by writing a few subject line variations for an upcoming campaign. Think of it like split testing without having to ever send an email.
The tool is best used to compare variations for the same campaign rather than multiple campaigns at once.
Step 2
Generate Your Results
The tool then takes those subject lines, breaks them up into key words and elements, and runs them through an algorithm that compares how previously sent emails with similar elements performed. The algorithm then creates a performance score (0-100) for each.
Don’t be discouraged if your scores are in the 40’s. Marketing emails will always perform slightly lower than non-salesy messages, so focus on the comparison and don’t worry about trying to magically reach 100.
Step 3
Share Your Feedback
Did the tool totally get it wrong? We’d love to know. Do you have idea for future versions? That’s just what we’re looking for. Prefer a different format for results? Great insights as well.
This is v1.0 of something we’ll be tweaking and building going forward, so have patience if you hit some bugs, share your thoughts, and keep checking back. It’s only going to get better.
