We’re excited to announce that Inntopia Commerce now supports 3DS. Short for 3D Secure, 3DS is an online payment security protocol that adds an extra layer of authentication to credit and debit card transactions, verifying the card holder’s identity to reduce fraud and unauthorized chargebacks.
When a guest enters their credit card information during checkout, their card is checked against the 3DS protocol which includes a frictionless check of the guest’s device. If any flags are raised, the guest must complete a one-time authentication to verify they are the owners of the card in order to complete the transaction. This technology is known by various names depending on the card brand including Verified by Visa, MasterCard SecureCode, and Discover ProtectBuy.
The most significant benefit of 3DS to resorts and hotels is the shift in liability. By completing this additional authentication step, an issuing bank becomes liable for fraudulent chargebacks. Even if a guest claims they have an unauthorized payment from you on their card, the card provider will typically be accountable for managing the refunds. According to Chargeback.io, implementing 3DS has been shown to decrease chargebacks by up to 70%.
