MLK Day is a chance to celebrate the achievements of the great Martin Luther King, Jr. and to find a way to honor the civil rights leader who gave so much to our country. While today is about remembrance, it is also about action. Martin Luther King Day of Service was created in 1994 to encourage Americans to take a day off from their normal life to focus on making a difference by participating in some form of volunteer work. There are so many great organizations across the country that could use your time and donations today!
Want to find a way to give back to your community? Here are some of Inntopia’s favorite organizations:
Chill Foundation: a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for under-served youth to build self esteem and life skills through snowboarding and other board sports including skateboarding, surfing, and stand-up paddle boarding. The organization’s programs focus on six weekly themes: Respect, Patience, Persistence, Courage, Responsibility, and Pride. Chill serves 1,200 kids between the ages of 10 and 18 years old each year in North America and has impacted almost 20,000 kids since it was started in 1995 by Jake and Donna Carpenter, owners of Burton Snowboards.
Friends of Stowe Adaptive Sports: a non-profit founded in 2010 on the belief that access to sports and recreational programs are a powerful means for people with disabilities to develop independence as well as physical and mental well-being. The organization seeks to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities living in or visiting Vermont by sponsoring participation in adaptive sports and recreational programs.
