Trends Q: Do people who use Gmail have more Twitter followers than those with AOL.com addresses?

photo of the author Gregg Blanchard

With the connection between a guest (Paul Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way) and their social presence (@theshermeister) firmly established, we’ve been able to do some interesting analyses. Today, we wanted to draw a direct line between someone’s email address and their social presence by comparing their provider to how many followers they have. Here’s what we found.

The Goods
To find our answer we looked at over 200,000 guests who had both a Twitter username as well as either an AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo email address. Then, we grouped them by their email provider and found the average number of followers each had on Twitter.

emailvsfollowers

On average, people with AOL email addresses had 217 followers, those with Gmail addresses had 307 followers, 151 followers for Hotmail users and 179 for Yahoo.

What This Means
As some of you may remember, this is a variation of a question we’ve asked before about what can we know about someone simply by looking at their email address. In the case of Gmail users, not only do they tend to be younger than folks using other providers, but they are also more likely to have a larger following on Twitter.

Though not as actionable as some other Stash insights, it’s interesting nonetheless that something as simple as an email provider could illustrate such a drastic difference when compared to a seemingly unrelated metric. Another reminder of what small pieces of data can tell us.

Next Week…
A new Stash insight like this one comes out next week. Stick your email below and we’ll make sure you don’t miss it.
