Q: What is the value of each additional child that is traveling with a resort guest?

Families are important to a good chunk of resort destinations. Children are a big piece of this formula as each additional traveler brings increased revenues. But how big is that increase? It was on this premise that we tried to answer a simple question: How valuable is each child that travels with a resort guest? Here’s what we’re seeing.

The Goods
To find our answer we looked mountain resort reservation data for 15 resorts across the last two years. We grouped reservations by the number of children and found the increase in revenue for each child-count compared to traveling with no children.

Right off the bat it’s clear that every additional child on a reservation leads to additional revenue as well. children lead to increased revenue. The biggest increases happen going from 0 children to 1, 2 to 3, 4 to 5, and 5 to 6.

What This Means
These jumps may be a result of how rooms are often set up to accommodate guests in even-numbered increments. Traveling with 2 children instead of 1 may not require a different room, but traveling with 3 instead of 2 very well could. Likewise with going from no children to 1.

In terms of overall stay, the factor we quickly find ourselves wondering about is length of stay. Does an increase in family size also increase the length of the trip? That’s a very good question and, as you might have guessed, that’s what we’ll be tackling next week. See you then.
