Partner Services’ Book Club Reads Thinking, Fast and Slow

Inntopia’s “Year of Learning” may be more than halfway over, but for Partner Services, the momentum continues with our August book club selection, Thinking, Fast and Slow. A New York Times bestseller by Princeton psychologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman, the book explores our two “modes of thought,” System 1 and System 2.[1]

Book ClubOur automatic mind, System 1, controls “fast” thinking. First impressions, biases, involuntary reactions to stimuli (like a loud noise), and the ability to drive a car on a familiar road or add 2+2=? without conscious thought all come under its purview. System 2, our deliberate mind, involves attention, choice, and focus. We employ System 2’s “slow” thinking when we keep ourselves from telling an inappropriate joke at a party, seek a friend in a crowd, or try to multiply 521 x 37.

These systems generally work well in tandem, keeping us safe and functional without excessive mental fatigue. What happens, however, when they fail or lead us astray? What if our “conscious” choices about the decisions we make, people we like, and politicians we vote to support are greatly informed by influences that aren’t conscious at all? Weaving prominent research and an engaging narrative voice, Kahneman explores these questions and the brilliance and pitfalls of human thought in Thinking, Fast and Slow.
